The Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, with other departments in the School of Physical Sciences, offers a one-year placement to a student. This placement offers the recipient a chance to learn how IT is used in a world-class institution, working with members of the team to deliver services which underpin the success of the department.

Over the course of the year, the sandwich student will receive training in the standard methods of the department, following our processes to support other members of the department in their use of IT. There will also be opportunities to look at "back-end" infrastructure, high-performance compute and network systems and to contribute towards projects in one or more of those areas, depending on the interests of the role-holder. The IT team collectively has enormous experience running a huge variety of systems in the academic environment and more widely, and enjoy sharing their knowledge and skills.

The placement is for a complete year, running from September to September. The placement holder will be employed at the standard University training level which includes a salary of around £23,350 (2025 figures) and 36 days annual leave.
